Eating out can be risky unless you are eating at an entirely gluten-free restaurant, but it is manageable.  It is important to know that just because a restaurant has a gluten-free menu doesn’t mean the staff:
  • Knows what gluten-free means
  • Can explain how the gluten-free menu items are prepared
  • Understands cross contamination and has established safe handling procedures to avoid any issues

Here are some helpful tips on dining gluten free:

Tips for dining out:
  • Plan ahead and check the menu in advance
  • Call in advance and talk to the manager and/or chef
  • Make a reservation and specify your dietary needs
  • Avoid dining during peak hours – this will allow the staff to pay more attention to your needs
  • Know what to avoid - avoid sauces, breading, and fried foods – eat foods as close to their natural unaltered state as possible.  Highly processed foods are more likely to contain gluten.
  • After you review the menu and determine a couple of items you think are safe, ask your server to verify with the chef.
  • Take a gluten-free dining card with you
Tips for fried items:
  • Fried items should be avoided at a restaurant due to cross contamination unless they have a dedicated fryer because the residue from the wheat items can adhere to a gluten-free item.
  • Nachos should always be questioned because it is common for a restaurant to ‘warm’ their chips in the fryer
Fried chips at any restaurant should be questioned to make sure they were prepared in a dedicated fryer.  If not, they are not safe.

Restaurant Dining Cards:
  • Purchase and carry a gluten-free restaurant dining card.  This card can be given to your server to ensure they understand what foods are safe/not safe for those following the gluten-free diet.
